Horsetail is a perennial plant
spreading by spores and by creeping rootstocks. It is not a flowering plant
but it is native to Canada. Many wildflower books do not list this plant,
I assume because it does not flower and displays characteristics of the
mushroom family.
I include it because many individuals
while walking the woods and streams may wonder what it is.
The picture above demonstrates
its immature look; below, the mature plants.
Another strain of Horsetail,
Equisetum palustre, is poisonous.
Equisetum arvense is safe for
use and is traditionally used for osteoarthritis and other related illnesses.
